curly green willow: tough and resilient, the boy will have humor.

In a tall glass vase

she arranges the stems,

the encoded languages of flowers.

She wonders, will Westerners know?

Note on rice paper—a gossamer shield.

Gold is the color of sorrow:

“We have gained much. We have lost so much more.”

The afternoon hours tent around her—

kimono of patterned emptiness—

the way green tea brushes porcelain.

Each leaf-blade, a knife, cuts the silence

with thought precisely incised into void.

blue stones: reproof

She is grateful for the red maple,

for the mannered arrangement of color.

She cannot shake the old characters:

three pines and a roof, meaning women

or the wood-bridge over a stream.
